I live in a rural ranch community in Texas. We trap and hunt feral hogs. A few years back, we trapped over 1,000 hogs using around 40 traps across our 4,400-acre ranch. This year-to-date (Jul2023), we have only collected 80 hogs. Why/how? Between our trapping program and team (Hog Busters), and those of us that stay up at night to hunt, we have significantly reduced the hog population.
So…I have several spots that I bait and wait, usually with a rifle, but also with my G20 loaded up with handloads (either 180 or 200 gr Hornady XTP bullets. I’ve taken 11 hogs at ranges between 50 – 75yds. I’ve also dropped 5 with a Ruger GP100 in .357 Magnum at those ranges. To be fair, I only have to walk out my back door to sit and wait for the bastards to show up. The last two were bachelors; the others were in a pack with sows and choates. In that case, you need a semi-auto of some sort, usually an AR-15 or AR-10. Those 75-80 pounders go real well on the grill. I feed the big boars and sows to the coyotes and buzzards.
Hasta luego y Buena caza,

Jd, you are fortunate to have such opportunities! I moved from NM to Sweetwater a year ago, and know there are hogs in these parts, but have yet to see a live one, much less find an opportunity to hunt them. A nice 80-pounder well dressed and injected/brushed with a mojo of garlic and sour orange overnight, then roasted whole …OMIGOSH!

We have hogs that invaded from Canada in the central northern part of Montana.. for what ever reason our FWP has not allowed the hunting there of beause they are not listed as a game animal, and probably won’t until they are so probmatic and have over run the farmland. I seriously don’t know what they are waiting for in regards to shooting these pest.

Wow, you have some seriously good hog hunting opportunities.
I have 1200 acres in Georgia I can hunt except for Oct,Nov,Dec. It is a deer lease but I pay to hog hunt in the off season.
It is good land and has a lot of hogs but it is a paper Company lease and they have cut a bunch of it over the last five years. It makes it really hard to pattern the hogs even with a feeder with the near constant tree cutting and land clearing.
The deer hunters shoot a few pigs and a couple of guys have a corral trap and they will trap 15 or 20 a year for meat and to try to keep the population in check.
I hunt them a lot with a G40 but I like to hunt them with other stuff just for fun. I have an AR pistol in.300 Blackout and an AR rifle in 7.62X39. I have killed them with a Marlin 45-70 and a Longbow. -

I would like to hear and see the results with the Hornady xtp bullets. Iām alternating the 200 grain xtp and a 200 grain cast in my ten.
