Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Optimum OAL for a G20 gen 4

1.2500" for almost every thing...  here is why.

The usual round nose FMJ (as in 45ACP 1.2750"Standard) because the full nose is there.  The 10mm when it came about used truncated cone designed projectiles, which had the nose already shorter due to the flat point or hollow point designs, this already made the COL shorter at 1.2500" to maintain the tipping angle equal to the longer round nose FMJ's and they still fit the standard interior of the magazine tubes.

Yes people have loaded longer COL to 1.2550" - 1.2600" allowing for slightly more power room or lower pressures.  What can happen in the magazine is the bullet nose can drag on the interior of the magazine tube, causing less spring tension to the upper most cartridge as it is being fed and longer loaded can strike the barrel chamber such that the tipping angle starts to add friction hampering feeding as the cartridge head tries to slide up the breech face and chamber fully.

These slight increases in friction here or there, can be the difference in proper feeding or stoppages or failures to go fully into battery.

Also the Wide Flat Nose bullets 0.3000" Sharp MEPLAT and wider may require even shorter COL to maintain space inside the magazine tube and proper clearances for tipping angles unimpeded due to their wider MEPLAT with respect to the angle measurements.

Thanks Shadow,  I have had some totally unexplained failures to feed with the 180gr XTP bullet and your explanation makes more sense than anything else I can come up with.  Plus, I run my 200gr WFN bullets quite short and they feed 100%.  TY

Hey blaster, how did you make out?  I sent an email and got no response.  I'm going to call today.  Do you have any new information?

Just curious, Intercooler.  Where did you source your flat bottom pin stops for your EAA?  I've found some pin stops but none saying specifically that they are flat bottom or reduced radius.  Thanks

10mm Hunting / Re: Hunting pistol choice

Something to consider n a hunting pistol. Temperature. If it's very cold where you are you might like the Glock over a 1911 due to the cold soaking into the steel frame. If you have to stalk with the gun in hand for a period of time after it has been holstered outside it sure is cold.

10mm Hunting / Re: 7" KKM barrel, would you?
« Last post by Forrest on Today at 06:21:58 AM »
Would I?  I did!  And I added a couple of extra inches just to be on the safe side  ;D  For some reason, I keep thinking that if it stays like this for more than 4 hours...I'll need to see a gunsmith!
Where does one get a barrel that length? With the American made LW now cutting it's offerings in half I am at a loss and curious to see about a longer barrel for my 29. With a light mounted it's no longer compact and I enjoy the increased energy for sure. Dropped in a 4.6 inch barrel the other day and was amazed at how much the impact on steel was increased. For handgun hunting, if the POA POI wasn't too badly shifted and I wasn't worried about space and drawing, I'd take the longest barrel I could. I'm converted and convinced.

Finally got around to some more accuracy testing.  Best groups so far out of my rifle ended up being 200gr JHP Nosler blems over Blue Dot. 30yds rested, 1st pic I 8.3gr, second is 8.7gr. I need to see if I can clean up the trigger.....

I used this one -

Took about 20 minutes with some 600 grit sand paper on a stone to get a snug fit.  You will need to file a cross slot for the pin. I drifted the sight in and then used a drill bit thru the slide to mark the location. I did this twice, 1st try was a 1mm fiber sight off of mu CZ PCR.  It was a good .02" lower than the stock GP front sight. We milled that one at my work and took a little too much off so it was lose in the dovetail. Second one (linked above) is a bigger fiber, much easier to see for me and it fills the notch in the rear sight better. The sanding took longer but got a nice snug fit. Will be shooting it again this weekend so we'll see how it groups with the rear drifted and larger front sight.

I am a glutton for punishment, bought one in December. It still had the mag release problems. Even SIG fmj would dump the mags occasionally. I have my doubts in can be fixed due to the centered mag catch cutout in the mags. Wish I could find a picture of the official fix. The gunsmith I emailed wouldn't say anything other than it wasn't just a stiffer spring.

Two other issues. The gun also shoots low and way left no matter the shooter. I modified and installed a HiViz CZ 75 front fiber sight which helped the elevation. The other problem involved the slide hanging up when returning to battery. Discovered a dent in the cam cut on the barrel that was preventing the slide from fully returning. Pretty sure it was there when I bought it since racking the slide never felt smooth.  A little time with some 600 grit sandpaper seems to have fixed the slide rtb issue. Couldn't get warranty to swap out the barrel, they wanted to see the whole gun. Problem with the warranty is you have to pay shipping to one of their gunsmiths so factor that in. For me it's close to $70 to get Fedex to ship a firearm.

Unless you are a collector I'd pass.
I would like to hear more about your front sight install.  My K100 shoots low and the CZ-75 sight is on the radar. Just wondering how much of a job it is?

So, if I find that I have feeding issues with some of my earlier loads with a COL of 1.2600, shorting them to 1.2500 shouldn’t be an issue. The question is this (possibly a dumb one : ), Is there any need to re-crimp them with my standalone Lee crimp die after bringing them down to 1.2500?
Thanks for your help on this
