Handguns / Re: Thoughts on 460 rowland
« on: January 11, 2018, 10:35:35 AM »
I don't know. I would be a little leery of converting an old .45 1911 to .460 Roland. There is a heack of a lot of pressure difference between the two cartridges, and I would be wondering if a gun designed to handle the pressure of a .45 round could take that pressure increase.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Thoughts on Longshot 10mm loads
« on: January 11, 2018, 10:32:13 AM »
I run the same cartridge length as you.  My guns are all Glock's.  Brass is Starline.

After the load development was done I settled in on 9.5gr of Longshot.  The load is accurate and quite powerful.  Gives 1,320 fps out of a 5.3" barrel and 1,225 fps out of an OEM G20 barrel.  I find it abusive in my G29  while giving 1,132 fps.

But I need to explain myself here.  Except for my G40, the 9.5gr load is hotter than I like.  Near nuclear IMO.  It is the arthritis in my right hand that tempers my interpretation of recoil.  I find the 9.5gr load simply too much.  But I have found the Montana 200gr WFN bullet to be very easy to throttle up and back, accurate and quite apt as a hunting bullet.  Not a thing in the world wrong with the XTP's but, for me, I find the 200 gr WFN a much better all around bullet.

But, but....  I think you'll find the sweet spot for the 180gr XTP to be between 9.0 and 9.5gr (CCI std primer) in a Glock.
I just saw Blue Dot on sale for $95 for a 5 pound jug at $95.99 for a 5 pound jug at Reloading Unlimited. I ignored it because I have 2 jugs of it.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: What are the "Good" Witnesses?
« on: January 11, 2018, 10:18:23 AM »
I really want to look into a Witness in 10mm, but NOBODY around me sells them. And I have small short fingered hands, so I need to hold one to see if their double stack feels good in my hands. (Which is why Glock is pretty much out of it, they do not feel right to me.) Not sure how to solve this dilemma.

What size glove do you wear or fit into? My hands are a size medium. I bought the thin aluminum grips for my Witness Hunter and since it is SAO I don't have to worry about a long double action reach.

Well I actually found a guy selling a full size steel 10mm Witness online. Called him up, and he came out to the house. I could BARELY get my mitts around the double stack grip, but I could, so I bought it. I am looking at maybe trying to find some aluminum grips that might be a bit thinner than the OEM ones.

I've been trying to find one of those Ruger 10mm convertibles I can afford. Still looking. :(

You might want to look at one of the new polymer offerings. How about a shoulder rig with a Hunter?

I've had a hard time finding shoulder holsters that will fit it.... I am more than happy to hear any and all recommendations! Like I mentioned in my other thread about my Hunter (where you responded) the finish on mine isn't great and shows wear from everything and it's making me baby the pistol and avoid taking it as a hiking carry gun. But with a good shoulder or chest holster I would definitely take it.

Compact 10mm I would bet my life on = Glock 29.

I wish this wasn't the case.  But even around here it seems there isn't a lot of interest in pushing manufacturers to step up the game on compact 10mm handguns.

I started a thread about that a few months back:  http://10mm-firearms.com/10mm-semi-auto-handguns/guns-that-could-be

There are a few guys here who have gotten the Witness Compact to run.  This thread:

http://10mm-firearms.com/gunsmithing/flat-recoil-spring-in-the-witness-10mm

Next issue is holsters.  I have been thinking about getting my Witness full size back in the carry rotation.  Years ago when it was my only suitable carry handgun I carried in a home-made holster.  And not a great one either.  I would love to have something like a Galco Summer Comfort for the Witness, or like my Vedder Light Tuck.  But finding a good, comfortable holster for a Witness is an exercise in frustration. Best option is one for another gun that happens to fit your witness.  But shopping for those is hard, especially online.

I love the witness line.  I will probably get a Witness P Compact and perform some gunsmithing on it similar to what StockBossII did to his.  And I will probably buy some kydex and make my own light-tuck for it.

They are good guns.  But they aren't "off the shelf" guns, imho.  You gotta want to invest in them to make them into a true workin/concealed carry gun rather than a range piece.

Dang this is a ton of great info, thank you! I've got some reading to do now.

Finding a holster for my Hunter has been rough, and I was hoping it was just because it was more unique. Sounds like it's across the board for Witnesses.

I'm not worried about putting some work into a pistol, I just want to know if it will function in the end. Ha, 6 CZ's later and they all have had a work over of some sort or another. I have a problem....

I would have thought that just about any holster for a CZ75 would probably fit a Witness no problem. But I do have a full size one. Does CZ make a compact?

EAA Witness in 10mm with a 40Cal. S&W barrel and spring added to it so I can shoot both calibers. Fourth pistol, one carbine, and one Mechtech 10mm CCU. This is my only double stack in pistols, though. The carbine uses Glock double stack mags, but I do not own any Glocks.

What can I say, I like 10mm.

Very nice, but 40mm barrel? :)

I have in 10mm two glocks, two EAA's and three 1911's (two are hi capacity).

The Standard full size Witness was my first 10mm purchase, and I think my best.  It is in the holster today, and it stands toe to toe with the G20 for reliability, and exceeds it in handling hot loads.  The only complaint it the Wonder (why the call it a) finish, which I have replaced with a parkerize + cerakote finish.

You won't be unhappy.

Actually, I was surprised when I looked up the serial number and saw this was manufactured in 2002. There is not a single mark on the outside on the frame or slide. No signs of any holster wear or anything similar.

General Discussion / Re: I've strayed a little...357 Sig.
« on: October 11, 2017, 02:46:47 PM »
Well, I seemed to have strayed further than you. In addition to my three 10mm pistols, and two 10mm carbines, I have a SIG P229 with both the .40 cal S&W and 357 SIG barrels. Kind of nice to swap between two calibers with a mere barrel change that probably tokes me about 30 seconds or less to do. Uses the same slide, the same springs, and the same mags for either caliber. And better yet, at the 7 yards I practice with them at both calibers have to exact same POA. I don't have to apply any Kentucky windage to my shots when I change calibers.

Not trying to start something but:

  • What kind of person could do something like this, with no apparent previous record or motive?  I could easily understand terrorism, but that's apparently not it
  • How could the hotel not notice someone carrying in, what, 23+ rifles???
  • How did he break the windows to shoot and no one notice or hear?
  • No motive yet at all???
I don't have any answers but this is just not making any sense for me.

Pat
1: A crazy person, why do you need any further explanation?
2: One at a time, no problem.
3: Vegas Rooms are pretty soundproof. So you won't hear it in the hotel outside of his room. Outside you have a live concert going. The music could cover any noise of the glass breaking.
4: See #1 above. Crazy people don't NEED a motive. On the flip side, he did have all that Antifa literature, and Antifa seems to be working up to armed rebellion.

It always gets me when people just can't rationalize crazy people doing crazy things. And then they start up all these conspiracy theories trying to rationalize it somehow, anyhow. And the best conspiracies are hard to disprove because it's hard to prove a negative. They just don't want to think loonies are walking among us.

I really don't care if these fruitloops want to commit suicide and go straight to Hell, but why do they always seem to want to bring an honor guard with them?

General Discussion / Re: Starline Brass News
« on: October 11, 2017, 02:28:47 PM »
I form cases from once fired LC 5.56 brass. (You would be surprised how many people leave that laying).

No, I wouldn't. Since 5.56 brass rarely has a caliber stamped on them that is what I use. I have a Harbor Freight cutter and cut the brass a bit long, size it, then trim any excess brass of it. Seems to work great. Now I like Starline brass, but when it is a little effort and I can make free brass, free wins.

I am still running on that group buy we had here for the 10mm Starline nickel plated brass. Best group buy EVER!
