10mm semi-auto handguns / New Sig 220-10mm
« on: May 10, 2017, 11:36:08 AM »
Just picked up a Match Elite 220-10mm.
Haven't range tested yet, that will come prob this weekend.

First impression ... HEAVY !  it is about 40 oz unloaded, but it really feels well in the hand ( single stack btw ) like a 1911. Not at all chunky like a G20.
Gun in in DA/SA with pulls at just under 10 and 4.5 lb. Holds 8+1 in the mag. Has a spur like 1911's to get a good solid grip without getting slide nipped.
Very nice Hogue G10 Piranha grips too.

It has the Sig night sights ( tritium ) so should be ok in dark.  Barrel has very good full case support, the best I've seen
DA trigger pull does need to smooth out tho the SA breaks fairly clean ( couple K of rounds it will feel prob much better )

Range time will really tell how much I like it.

Factory 10mm ammo / Sig fmj and soft brass?
« on: August 17, 2016, 05:30:57 PM »
Was in Gander Mountain ( va ) last week and was able to pick up some 180 Sig fmj ammo... 4 boxes

Was impress with the ammo for stock ammo... compared to my normal ( 10.4 gr of blue dot with 180gr head ) , it felt a bit more stout.

What i also felt was that the brass for reloading was a bit softer than the normal Starline I use, almost like I could feel the difference... anyone else comment?

As as PS, my normal blue dot above goes to .432 in stock g20 v3 and I found the Sig to hit .433- .4335 with a few at .434 ( out of 100 )
Not even my 180/800x loads at 9 grs hit .434

Reloading 10mm ammo / Finnally bought a chrono
« on: August 01, 2016, 10:05:35 AM »
Well, I finally bought a chronograph.... but not the way I wanted and now I need another

A friend had his set up and I had a couple of rounds to test so of course I asked to fire 5 rounds.

Stock G20.3, 200 gr xtp with new starline brass / remington 2.5 primer/1.258 oal  and a good dose of 800x ( but less than Underwood ).
( had already fired a few lower sets with no problems )

first shot 1194fps
second shot chrono ! DAMMN IT !! " curses inserted here  "

Well At least I got one.... Friend looks over and says looks like you bought a chrono... I pulled out $150 and he said fine.

So, I'm looking for a new chrono ( I let him carry the pieces home )

I will say the loads with the 200xtp and 800x are accurate, before the above I was in the 4" ring at 25ft with 10 shots. I was looking to hit 1200fps and fiq I got that. All cases looked normal with the glock bulge ( no smiles ) and the primer starting to flatten on the last set of loads... cases measured in at mostly at  .433 some at .4335 and out of 20, two were .434.

Handguns / Sig 220 grips
« on: May 13, 2016, 06:01:22 AM »
Have a Sig 220 with the wrap around snap on grips ( stock grip ) ...
Who makes quality grips that screw on ( with grip screws included ) ? ( other than factory )

Gear/Equipment / Chronograph purchase
« on: April 24, 2015, 09:16:39 AM »
Looking at a chronograph ( my first ) and don't want to break the bank but do want one that has the basics.
Looked at Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph.... seems to fit.

But, does it need a light kit if used in an indoor range ??

Reloading / 45 acp and Autocomp test
« on: April 22, 2015, 10:58:22 AM »
Like everyone else I know, powder is " get it while you can " basis...
I usu use Unique for 45acp, but just finished up my last and trying to get more is almost nill.

So in my powder stock, I see 3 lbs of AUTOCOMP I had gotten a while back when looking for 10mm powders.  Checking out the web site for the load data , there isn't much, but enough to work with. Not much on the web either (nothing in the books I have )

Winchester AutoComp  LRN @ .452"   OAL@1.200"   MIN@6.1 / 832  13,700 CUP  MAX@6.6 / 896  16,400 CUP
(fmj fp same max load of 6.6gr )

I make 20 at 6.2grs and 20 at 6.4grs  using OAL 1.25 with extreme 230 gr plated RN
Gun is a stock Sig 220

Well they shot very accurate, with 5 shots groups and 3" spread at 25 feet  ( the best I can do anyway )...
the 6.2 gr seemed a bit 'dirtier' then the 6.4 gr and I'll prob next try the max load as it seems they burn cleaner near the upper level load, no signs of any problems, no unburnt powder.   ** BTW, cleaner than the Unique I was using, tho the Unique seems a bit 'snappier ' .

In all, I was happy with the results as its just for paper anyway... and it seems to be an ok powder for the 45.

Reloading 10mm ammo / XTP 180g and 800x
« on: February 13, 2015, 07:00:13 AM »
A friend gave me a box of Hornady 180 XTPs ... for my G20

I was looking to workup sets like the Underwood XTP load of same with 800x at just under their  9.4g listing ( prob 9.2 as final load ).

But looking through the factory dumps I see 800x, Lovex, AA9(?), as used powders
So the question is , what powder are they using now??  Is Lovex available here??
Was there a change in 800x lately?

Just staring shooting the 45acp more and needed cases...

Managed to get new de-milt'ed cases ( pulled heads ) from

These are new Federal cases that are already primed...  $130 per K   ( they sell in 250 bags too )

Not a bad price for new and primed in really nice shape.  ***( all large pistol primer )

Reloading 10mm ammo / Extrapolate powder loads ..
« on: May 13, 2014, 07:36:17 AM »
I was chatting with a bud about loading some 10mm.
He stated he didn't have/find any data for his cast bullets....

I told him, I was taught to go with the next higher weighted ( same type ) bullet he could find and start there as the powder weight would be ok for work ups in a lighter bullet.

He insisted on using a lower weighted bullet and starting there but dropping the gr by the same % of the bullet weight.

I told him, just let me know when u shoot them so I'm not next to u.

Expert info requested ... and why

tia Tom

ps yes will have a Chronograph

Factory 10mm ammo / Double Tap 180gr Controlled Expansion JHP
« on: April 10, 2014, 06:15:50 PM »
Ran 100 rounds thru my stock G20 v3.... wanted to make sure there would be no surprises.

Real snappy and for me not as accurate as my target loads, but all within a 9" target at 25ft.

Was suprised, I guess, that I had only one problem.  On one mag of 10, the slide stayed open with one left ( so only 9 fired ).
Other than that it was all 100%... not a smile or even what I could see as a bulge diff than my mid power loads.

very happy... maybe they'll replace my silvertips as the carry load.
