Converting a 1911 or Witness to 9mm
« on: June 02, 2013, 05:02:12 AM »
I placed an order with EAA for a 9mm conversion a long time ago but they still don't have parts. It wasn't really what I wanted for my Match being a non-Match kit. I haven't been able to get an answer on barrel OD or I could just buy a 9mm barrel and mags using my current 10mm slide. In a strange way I think EAA may use the same slide for some calibers since they sell the 6" barrel in 9mm but the Hunter model is 10mm and .45ACP only.
My other thought was converting my Dan Wesson Razorback to 9mm. Can this be done with a barrel, bushing and mag swap?

I'm trying to get away from using my Wife's 9mm which I shoot often. I would like to convert one of mine to shoot the 9!

probably be almost as cheap in the end to pick up one of the Mossad surplus Tanfoglios in 9mm.

You can find a dog eared one for about $299, and for just s few dollars refinish it yourself.  Then you have another gun.

Oh...Wait.  My bad.  I keep forgetting you don't live in free America.  That may make this hard to do under your state laws.

So, the extractor groove diameter on 9mm and 10mm is the same, even though the case head is obviously larger on the 10mm.  Chances are extraction would work despite the case head mis-match.  As far as a barrel for your Match....I doubt it will drop it.  But the fitting will be minimal.  The real issue is dimensions.  At one time the 9mm/40 S&W Witness guns were smaller than the 38 super/10mm/45 acp witness guns.  Seems like I read they stopped doing that and now they are all the same size, but I would definitely call them and ask the questions before I spend money on a barrel.  Same goes for mags.  If the frames are still different sized, then 9mm mags wont work in your 10mm match.

In a 1911 you don't have to worry about dimensional incompatibilities as long as you avoid the springfield EMP specific barrels and mags.  The EMP is dimensionally smaller than a regular 1911, especially in the grip.  It only works for 9mm/40S&W.

But, 1911's can be abit finicky about geometry and feeding.  You may have a hard time getting it dialed in, but maybe not.

Is your 1911 a 10mm or .45acp ? (I'm guessing 10mm)
The Ejector on the 45 is different than the ones use for 9 or 10mm
The 10mm Tanfoglio Slide will run /eject 40cals, but not 9mm (reliably)
I haven't gotten a 9mm for my (Large Framed) Witness, because of Magazine reliability issues
But I love to shot the Colt 9mm Conversion on my Delta GC Frame

It's a 10mm. I phoned EAA about getting a 6" slide for my Hunter and although they said they don't offer one they do the barrel. Then they waffled and said they may be able to get one. I was going to us IFG but they said they closed up.

You know, it's odd that they list the Stock as having 4.5" Barrel, when my 10mm "Longslide" Conversion Barrel is 4.835"
True, it's still not the 6" you need

4.5" is the standard length for the full size and stock.  The Match has the longer 4.8" barrel.
