Here is a very detailed explanation of the 2nd Amendment by Forbes...please pass it around to show why the Government wishes to disarm or limit our rights...

Without disagreeing with the authors overall premise regarding an armed society being essential to true freedom, I do not agree that those who seek to disarm us are malicious in their intents.  They genuinely just don't see the same picture we do.

I attribute this mostly to education and lack of experience in the "real world".  There may be other psychology at work as well.

For the most part I find that people I encounter who are "anti-gun" fall into two categories.  Either they are truly irrational about guns, as described in the above link related to psychology, or they just haven't really thought it through.

An example of the first is a nice young man who used to live in my neighorhood.  Hated guns.  Once I got to know him I found out a favorite uncle had committed suicide with a gun.  This young man was unable to associate that negativity with a beloved uncle, so it became the guns fault.  Nothing I can do about that.  I am sorry for his loss, but until he can properly associate the blame with his uncle and not with an inanimate object, he is truly a lost cause.

An example of the second is my wife, and most of her college friends.  Raised in upper middle class America in a liberal enclave of the general conservative west, she viewed guns as relics of a bygone time.  Artifacts with no place in a modern civilized society.  It took many, many hours of patient, non-emotional (on my part) debate.  But now she is about as pro-gun as anyone you are likely to meet.

The first group is a small minority of America, and by-in-large a lost cause.  Nothing we say or do is going to change them until they are willing to confront some deep emotional issues.

The second group, however, can be won over.  By being responsible gun owners, embracing those suggestions that do make sense, like proactively securing arms that are not in use, rigorously observing the four rules of gun safety, and not leaving litter, refuse and wild-fires in the wake of our shooting activities, we can create opportunities to change their point of view.

Yes, they are wrong, but we all have been wrong before about something. The goal here is to politely and gently engage them and help them discover the beauty of self-governance on their own.  Often I do this by using some other topic where they already understand freedom.

Sex education is a great example. They understand that you can't regulate sex by government mandate, and therefor you must educate people about sex.  Generally these people are pro-choice as well.  Even though many of them see abortion as killing, they are more indignant about the government denying them the right to make their own choices in health-care, even if that choice may have a negative effect on another.  It is a great place to build commonality of understanding with regard to firearms.  Self-defense and the right to arms has negative consequences in a free society, but the consequences of surrendering those rights or subjecting them to invasive government oversight are far, far greater.

Excellent contribution.  I will bookmark this page.  Thanks Shadow!

The state of Illinois needs to just kick Cook County out.  Make it the federal enclave Chicago, District of Lake Michigan or something.
