Modifying a Comp-Tac MTAC for G20 to fit a G40
« on: December 11, 2016, 05:39:31 PM »
I am soon likely to buy a G40.
Comp-Tac does not make a MTAC for the G40. They also do not make "slide" versions for the 10mm/45 Glocks.
I am contemplating buying a MTAC for a G20 and cutting it into a slide version.
Does anyone foresee trouble with this idea?
Can someone post a pic of a G20 MTAC so I can see how much meat I have to work with?
Thanks in advance, Bat.

I would do just what you are thinking.  Pull the kydex body, visit my chop saw, clean it up with some 120 grit/220 grit, and put the kydex body back in place.

What I would really like is a Milt Sparks Criterion. Sadly they are not making G40 holsters.  :(

Bat Rastard,

Are you sure you want to cut on the holster body? A few passes with a heat gun will open up the muzzle end of the kydex body, allowing you to slide the 40 in easily. Unless you want it shorter, of course. Also, I'd recommend a band saw for any cutting chores... it's more precise and gives you a bit more control.

Hth,
Ron

Ron556 makes a really good point.

I received on Monday my new IWB and trigger guard holsters from Novatech.  I got them both for $25 as a part of a holiday promo.  I guess response was good as it took four months to get the gear.

On to the point.

The holsters are for my G29.  I figured I could use the trigger guard holster for both my G20 and G29 as is, and with a visit to the chop saw as I suggested above, the IWB would be a switch hitter too.

Kind of....

See the frame of the G29 and G20 are slightly different.  Specifically, where the dust cover transitions to the full frame is slightly farther in front of the trigger guard on the G29.  The result is the G20 doesn't really fit right in the trigger guard holster, and would be similarly out of sorts in the IWB hoster.

If, on the other hand, I were to heat the holster body and open up the muzzle end, I could also open up the holster where the dust cover transition occurs.  This should not affect how tightly the holster fits and there are plenty of other contact points.

TL;DR - heating and re-shaping better than chopping as you can fix other small contour differences if needed.
